Here in central/northern New York, just about any old farm has rhubarb and blueberries around. I've never done a thing to any of our's and it does fine. Been picking on it for over 30 years. A guy up the road puts heavy horse manure on his every year also splits the roots every year or so. I must admit his stuff grows better that our's. But, we already have more then my wife can freeze and/or make pies from.
One thing I've found though. I've tried many times buying rhubarb from nurserys to plant in places I didn't have it. None has ever done as well as whatever the old local varieties are. Sometimes old stuff is better.
