As far as your experience in the P-51, I read an article once about a fellow who set a new low level world speed record in an F104 he restored himself. They figured out that at 900 mph at 50 feet altitude there was about a 300 yard time lag between his eyes and his brain. In other words, what he was seeing in front of him was already several hundred yards behind him.
One of his crewmen told him not to worry about it, if he flew it into the deck he'd never know it. The fellow said that was a comforting thought.
