The hitch ball isn't going to prevent the accident and I doubt if it will cause any more dollar damage. The bumper and grille will have to be replaced whether it's a crinkle or a big hole.
A few years ago my son and I were in my old Dodge pickup stopped at a red light. We felt a bump in the rear so we both got out and walked to the back of the pickup. My son is 6'3" and I'm 6'2" and we both were bulked up wearing insulated cover-alls. When the driver of the car that rear ended us saw us come around the back of the pickup he started sinking down into the seat and his eyes were like dinner plates. I wish I would have had a camera to capture that 'look'.
The pickup hitch did a good number on the car's grille, with pieces of it laying on the street. We could tell the car driver didn't speak english so we just got back in the pickup and drove away laughing. Jim
