Perhaps you have already rerouted the ground cable, if not, relocate it to a starter mounting bolt. Most ground cables are attached to the body work and xxx years of rust,dirt and paint create excessive resistance. What size battery cables do you have? 12V cables are not heavy enough to carry the needed amperage for a 6V system. You should use 1/0 gauge copper cables for a 6V system. 12V cables are usually 6 gauge. To derermine the starting ampeage your tractor is pulling, obtain an inductive ampere meter designed for measuring starter draw. That's some ideas I have used, I hope they work for you.
