I kept my '79 Suburban, 8.5 mpg, for many years for just that reason. I bought it after being hit twice while driving a bright red Chevy LUV and the other drivers said "I didn't see you". Well, with that 3/4 ton Sub, it didn't matter if they saw me, they were gonna lose the argument. I figure I put about 120K miles on it and still spent less on gas than I gained in peace of mind.
