Hi Raye, Virgin R-11,12,22,502 and lesser used discontinued refrigerants sell for $10-40/lb. Severe ozone depletion is the debatable reason these refrigerants are no longer manufactured. The reality is that Dupont (freeon) and other large gas manufacturers can sell you a replacement gas (principally 134a,506,509)that are 60-80% as efficient as the above. In addition, all the new refrigerants are compatible only with ester based oil vice mineral, so you�re looking at an expensive flush to convert if it is even possible. The last ship that I was c/engr on was built new in 1995 (R-12/22 mfr was discontinued in 1992) and I converted the system to 134a in 1997. In addition to the cost of flush, testing and recharge the reclaimed 1000# R-22 plus 2000# reserve was turned over to the shipyard for disposal. Consider the billions of lbs of refrigerants carried in USN and civilian ships alone. This is one of the biggest govt/mfr rip-off's ever. To buy, sell or repair with the former refrigerants you are reqd to be EPA certified as/or under the supervision of a "Universal technician" as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
