I always used to be hard on them, until someone pointed out that these are people who are just trying to make a living, in a job that is much worse than most of us can imagine, instead of just sitting on the couch drawing welfare. Since then, I either don't answer the phone, or if I do, just tell them "not interested" immediately so they can go on to the next call and maybe have better luck.
I remember when I was a kid, telling my dad how awful I thought being a garbage collector would be- he told me "Never make fun or belittle anyone doing an honest job to make a living for his family." I've never forgot that.
