As others mentioned, wide front is likely a good choice for you. Also 3 pt. hitch is versatile. If you want an "old" tractor, the Ford 8N, especially side distributor (50-52) is a good place for beginner to start. They are a little easier to work on than the earlier models. Ferguson TO20 or TO30 are similar. Inexpensive, easy to find parts, easy to work on, lots of implements out there, and versatile. If you are gardening or mowing lots of grass, the IH Cub and Super A are great. They just don't normally have the 3pt hitch. Look for a local club. Go to tractor shows. Buy some tractor books.
