John: The serial number on a "N" series tractor is on the left hand side of the engine block. This may also help.
8N is a four speed forward transmission
9N & 2N are both three speed transmissions.

The 8N rear axle has a double nut holding the hub to the axle (so does the NAA, or Jubilee tractor but they have a overhead valve 134cu-in engine in them).

The 9N and 2N have rivited center rear axle hub which is the brake drum.

The 9N, 2N and 8N had 4 cylinder flat head engines except there were a few with 6 cylinder engines though not many.

If this is a ferguson tractor such as a T0-20, TO 30 or TO-35 it would have an over-head valve cylinder head not a flat head.

On the left hand side of the engine block there would be a number such as Z-120 or Z129 or Z134. Below are a list of tractors these engines were in.
TO-20 had the Z-120 continental engine
TO-30 had the Z-129 continental engine
TO-35 had the Z-134 continental engine

I hope this answers your question.
