She was given an excuses absence, a cab ride to the abortion clinic, and the expenses were paid, all without the knowledge or consent of her parents. Of course, you'd not know anything about it if you relied on the local paper, since it wasn't reported there.
But to your original question, what's wrong with "taking advantage of" your rights? Isn't that what rights are all about? If you don't use your rights, why have them?
