Gear sets lose about 1% of the power through them & turn it into heat.
A "power shift" transmission with a primary clutch or torque convertor with a lockup has a few more gears to lose power in & use more power at oil pump.
A power shift with a non lockup torque convertor has it's place in some applications but is the least " power" efficient.
