Don't know if this is your kinda thing, but I just happened to run across this as I was reading your post. Everyone wanted to sound like Ed back when, this guy nails it. And he's not even in a band, just likes to noodle around. Wish I could play like that.
Ed said a big part of his sound was a device he made called a VARIAC. He took a dimmer light switch and put it in line in front of his amp, lowered the input voltage so he would stop burning out tubes. In the article I read it said in big bold letters "DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME"!!!
