You need to buck up that shaft before hitting on it if it worries you- also makes hammering more effective. Often seen in old books, "bucking up" is simply supporting the shaft on the opposite side so it doesn"t flex. Pressure on the bearing is then a non-issue. Use blocking, jack, etc-anything solid to support it. Then whang away!
