There's no doubt that some folks make a nice income off both government and entirely private grants.

At the same time, there is no reason a market garden -- and that is the type of farming we're talking about -- wouldn't work in Detroit.

The primary issue with urban areas is the initial cost of bringing in clean soil. Generally these types of efforts are very intensive, and lend themselves to raised beds and greenhouses.

I can't speak about Detroit, but the Boston area demand has outstripped the supply of farmers. There are organizations that want to start up farmers markets that can't find enough farmers to do so. Part of that is the time it takes to drive into the city; having market gardens in the city itself help alleviate that issue.
