I grew up on an '36 Allis WC with the flattened pipe. Of course, I had to take the pipe out as I wanted lots of noise, macho!!!! Now I wear hearing aids. The flattened pipe really does cut down on the noise, makes more of a hssing sound. I like it today. I have a '39 WC today and made my own pipe, 2" I think and flattened it in a vice. Looks like the originals did.
