Mike, I to asked this question about a year ago and most of the people thought it was to create back pressure. The style is called a (under the hood muffler). I had bought a few of these at a Central Tractor going out of bussiness sale, so I am thinking that they are still available somewhere. I am not positive as to what all tractors used these, but I know the IB had them, and they will also fit on the B, C, CA.
