Try tapping on the starter, the starter drive or solenoid may be stuck. You may try jumping it straight to the starter, that would let you know if the starter is bad. After you do this you should check all those damn saftey switches (blade engage lever, under the seat on some models,neutral start switch on trans. and on and on ....)
