Most 12 volt coils want to see about 9 volts when operating; they do this with a resistor in the 12 volt battery circuit. Since you only will have 6 volts, it won't work right even if you remove any resistors that are in the circuit. I think you will need a 6 volt coil and the proper resistor that goes with it.
