HOW would the 4X4 unit hubs be sealed in a 2WD application without the axle shaft inserted in them... the inner lip seal on (at least the GM truck style) seals to a shoulder on the CV axle shaft.
Without the axle shaft in place the inner bearing would be exposed to dirt and water AND the hub would be prone to falling apart without the axle shaft to hold it together.
Unless there's an inner grease cap that fell off with the bearing (which a 2WD hub WOULD have), I'm gonna go with cjd12000 and say you mucked up and installed 4X4 hubs on a 2WD!!!!!
(I HOPE I'm wrong 'cause if you did that, you'll NEVER "live it down"!)
Better double check on that tonner, too, just to be SURE the hubs that are on there are OK!
