New energy sources are like any other new techology. Require investment & time for public awareness/acceptance.
Time will bring the cost of new sources down as prices for calculators, microwaves, computers etc were.
A fresh look at the situation maybe required. In 1875 people were looking for better horses & improved gas lamps. No one was wanting/looking for or had thought of tractors or electric lamps. And look how that techology has been refined.
Batteries don't store enough power per pound of weight or cubic foot of area. Power is still required for charging & only 70 to 80% of the power in can be retrieved. The rest is lost as heat, gassing & chemical reaction(s).
Fuel cells if enough natural gas if found are already viable. Enough natural gas is frozen at the ocean floor as hydrates to last several hudred years. Just tough to get at. All the C02 in the atmosphere will allow palm trees to grow in Ohio too.
Natural gas is difficult to store or retrofit. It's readily converted into easily stored methyle alchohol if mixed with steam in a platinum/paladium catalyst reactor.
Some people will hollor about nuclear power but it's a good cheap source of steam.
The general public's perception of nuclear power is just as accurate as thier understanding of agriculture & hunting/firearms. I work in a nuclear power plant & what's inside doesn't resemble what the media yapps about. For example the media perception last month was;" 1/4 the people in California were in the dark at any given time" or so it seemed.
A properly designed/built & run reactor vs the Russian Chernoble mess is like compairing heating your home with. A forced air heat pump vs an open camp fire in your basement.

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
