We bought about half of an old fellow's farm in 1976- he was keeping the home place, selling us bare land next door. He had two old dogs, and told us that he didn't think he'd be able to convince them that they didn't own that place anymore, but if they gave my cattle any trouble, "Just shoot 'em! If you don't have a gun, come borrow mine! They've never bothered my cattle, but you just never know!"
They hung around our cattle all the time, and they all became great friends. They saved my calves from coyotes more than once, I believe.
The fellow had been a rancher in Wyoming, and was just stating the law of the range.
