Ford has been closing dealers for about the last 20 years. B.I.L owned the one in Whitehall and was told by Ford to either sell it to a dealer from Grand Rapids or lose the franchise. Ford demanded that he buy a certain mix of vehicles in order to get the best unit pricing. Kinda hard to sell Birds and Cougars to farmers so he would buy the mix and then try to do dealer trades where he could sell the products to the right market. Dealers have to play the Ford game or they get all sorts of grief when ordering parts and getting corporate support for pricing. Last Summer when I was in Whitehall I noticed that the dealership is closed so buyers have to go to Muskegon at Great Lakes Ford. I suppose it is moving the business in the direction where they can remain profitable.
