The Transmission and the Hydraulics on a 9N share the same fluid. With the PTO engaged so that the lift and the PTO are operating, there is a lot of splashing from the gears in the transmission. My 8N will weep a bit of fluid around the filler cap due to a bad seal when under load. If your transmission cover is leaking, I would say that it is just the gasket. If the Transmission, PTO and Lift all work well, I would not worry about it. Just keep an eye on the fluid level. The system takes 5 gallons total (3 drain plugs and one fill hole on the tranny cover). You can either use the old spec 90 weight EP Gear Oil or the new spec M2C134D Ford Hydraulic/Transmission Fluid (don't mix them). If the fluid weeping from the tranny cover bothers you, you can replace the gasket easily. If the lift is having problems, you can pull the right inspection plate (one with the dip-stick on it) and watch the fluid inside with the PTO engaged and while raising and lowering the the lift. If there is fluid spraying from the top of the hydraulic housing, then you have a problem that will need attention eventually. The Hydraulic housing is self contained, runs off the PTO shaft running through it, and there are no high pressure hoses between the compartments. Get an I&T FO-4 Manual. Will save you alot of headaches and will answer most of your questions...
