I think it's a holdover in some cases from years ago when diesels were harder to start and fuel was cheap. Cylinder wall wash-down in my opinion is a crock--if the cylinder is firing properly the fuel spray is being burned. After working her real hard, I'll let her idle a bit so that temperatures normalize. Same goes for my tractor. An operator told me that he'd seen another operator weld the valves to the seats in a D9G after running real hard in the summer and shutting down too soon.
