Back when the roads were first tarred, they did the long north-south streets (parallel to the river) first. Was before my time, but for some reason - $$$, planned that way, whatever; it took an extra year or 5 to get around to paving the shorter streets that ran from the river up to the hill.
Soooo - everyone in town got used to driving faster on the paved streets, and slower on the unpaed & bumpy streets.
Just natural for those on gravel to stop for those going by on tar.
And 60 or so years later, we all _still_ drive that way. Even those of us who weren't around.
Yea this town can be scary to those not from around here, we do _not_ yield to the right!
