I'm not a trucker, but I can give you a few reasons. As F14 said, diesel engines used to be hard to start. Aside from tradition, it's done to provide heat or air conditioning while the driver sleeps. Although there are various types of free-standing units made to take care of this, not everyone has them. Engine manufacturers recommend against extended periods of idling, claiming that lower internal temperatures while idling cause more wear than would the same number of hours under load. If the engine has been working, Chances practice of idling the engine for a few minutes prior to shut down can avoid damage to the engine bearings and turbocharger...Al English
