My son "found" a buck under somewhat similar circumstances during last summer's wheat harvest . We running shortly after dark when put the deer thru his machine. Apparently it had been struck on a nearby road, then managed to get about 100 yds into the wheat before expiring. My son didn't spot the deer until it was in the header. By the time the machinery stopped moving the hapless deer was being torn apart in the cylinder. Took us a couple hours to clean out the mess.

The next night a large racoon narrowly avoided a similar fate in my machine. I noticed the wheat directly ahead moving as if a light wind was blowing, then suddenly the 'coon just sort of appeared beneath the reel. Somehow it managed to avoid the cutter bar and auger, then escaped by jumping out of the header over the left side snout and disappearing into the standing wheat. After the experience the night before, I wasn't sorry to see it leave under it's own power!
