I don't see where a head-change is going to change anything with the rest of the engine. It is what it is. I've heard the old argument many times that a good tight head will just raise the compression and put more of a load on the bottom end.
Only scenario I can think off where it would cause "new" problems - would be if the old head had really leaky valves and the engine subsequently skipped and had low power. You then put on a tight head, all the cylinders now fire and you've got more power, and now burn more oil.
I've done a lot of valve jobs on old beat engines - and always wound up with someting a little better, not worse.
