I would suggest keeping in touch with the school and following the school bus route. I bet the driver didn't vary a lot from the regular route, at least until they went off the road.
As far as using Google Earth goes, I don't think it would help at all and might just confuse things more. I have looked at my property on Google Earth and can see that the view they have is at least 7 or 8 years old. It is easy to pick out buildings and vehicles, so I can recognize how thing used to be arranged a few years ago. Maybe there is a version of Google Earth that is more up to date, but I think you would need to have access to military satellites to get instant views of an area. And I bet that would be REAL HARD to get access to.
