The snow DOES in fact go out the side,(called the caseing) The top shute rotates and is used to put the snow in specific areas,like loading a truck for hauling. Oshkosh Truck makes bigger blowers than this one. Triple Augars plus the impellar. 475 H.P. turbo charged Detroit Diesel engine just to power the blower head,(puts the snow out there 250ft - 350ft) and a seperate 8 cylinder engine to power the vehicle itself. However, this John Deere Blower is quite the machine. Big $$$ I'm sure.
