Drafted in 1943/ Army/Infantry. One year in camps stateside, for training. First pay was $21 a month. At end of first year, rec'd a free, all expense cruise, to England, then a 4 month jaunt/ walking tour of France-summer of '44. Back to England to a hospital for the amputation of my left foot, then back to USA for a year of hospital, to patch me up for the next long haul! Uncle Sam offered to give me a stipend for every year after that, so, wisely, i took it! Been nice! Wood foot works fine-i did/ do enything, except walk in the water, but i got used to that! Money comes in handy! I'm now 85!
