My theory if your 6V ain't broke don't fix it, but if it is, then by all means replace it with a 12 volt system. In any of the 12 volt conversions that I have done over the past 5 years I have hand very little or no problem when I use a 12 volt coil. I have had many problems when I try to reduce the line with a ballast resistor, In any of the early ones that I have Done with resistors I ended up going back to replace it with a 12 volt coil just to make sure that I have a happy customer.
