A check of my motors auto repair manual shows most 12 volt with external resistor coils use a resistor of 1.35-1.9 ohms. If the resistor you are using was designed for a coil that draws more amps than your Ford coil, it may not drop the voltage low enough. The manual shows most Ford and GM car coils drawing 4-6 amps while a Chrysler coil draws 3 amps, so the Chrysler resistor may be the best match for your tractor coil. Also check that the alternator is producing not over 15 volts as measured at the battery. An alternator with a bad or miswired regulator that is producing excess voltage will quickly burn points and coil. If you use a Delco 10 si alternator, make sure the #2 regulator plug wire is connected to the Bat stud on the alternator rear. This should not be necessary if you are using a 1 wire alternator.
