: How do you change a generator to an Alternater using a DELCO alternator? We just smoked the
: new alt so apperently we miswired it. We also went to a neg ground. PLEASE HELP. This is on a
: John Deere 620. THX Jerry

I don't know which Delco you are using, but I like the Delcotron internal regulator style the best. I have installed these on A and B tractors using the following method: Take the white wire that comes from the ammeter and put an eyelet on it and hook it to the alt's output terminal. Then go to the parts house and get a pigtail that is made to plug in to the regulator terminals on the Delcotron. Take the wire from the inside terminal of the regulator plug in and put an eyelet on it and put it on the output terminal with the white wire. The remaining wire needs to be energized when the tractor is started to excite the alternator. I bought an oil pressure switch with two terminals from the parts house that CLOSES at 5 psi. get the appropriate brass fittings and adapt them with the switch into the oil pressure gauge line. Take a 14 gauge wire and run it from the ammeter to one side of the oil pressure switch. Now go to the local JD hangout and get a AR 90841 wiring harness and a AR 85283 rectifier. adapt the blade end of the harness to the remaining oil pressure switch terminal. adapt the far end of the harness to the remaining wire at the alt plug in. Plug the rectifier into the harness at the connections that are at about the middle of the harness. These parts are what are used on 30 and 40 series (4430, 4440 series) tractors to do the same job. It is possible to get the two wires on the regulator backward. If you do, the alt will burn out in a fairly short period. If the alt becomes warm after hooking wires up without starting the engine, the wires at the regulator are backward. Switch them and test it again. Now when you start the engine, the oil pressure will close the switch, and that will provide juice to excite the alt. When you shut the engine down, the oil pressure will bleed off and turn the alt off. Works great for me. Good Luck.
