Mark B, I use my Alltel cell phone tethered to my laptop when I am traveling. For the last few years it cost $30 a month but since Verizon bought out Alltel they now want an additional $10 for unlimited use. I can use my phone without this service but the minutes count against the ones allowed in our plan. As far as how fast it is, sometimes it is pretty good and sometimes I think that it is slower than dial up. It depends where I am located.
