Rear shock placement on pickup trucks - A QUESTION ????

This isn't a tractor question (although we could say it's a tractor-hauling pickup truck I'm asking about). Anyways, I've noticed when driving behind some pickups that one rear shock is mounted on the front of the rear axel housing and angles forward to the mount on the frame, while the other one is mounted on the rear side of the housing and angles back to the frame. Then, other trucks seem to have both shocks on say the front or the back, not staggered. Any reason for the staggered mounting position? I would think it might have a tendency under some circumstances to create some sort of unbalance, is this possible?
