How long should I run diesel in my hydraulics

I have seen in previous posts that replacing a gallon of hydraulic fluid with diesel or kerosene is a good way to clean an old tractor's hydraulic system. How long should I run the tractor with this mix to get a good cleaning? Should I work the hydraulics? I have a '58 MF50 and plan to dump the hydraulic fluid soon so I figured I might as well give the system a cleaning. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
