Greg Howdy, I'm in mid-Missouri, and we do not get extremly cold for long spells here. I have a Ford 5610 diesel,I use a block heater for start ups. I have found this to be easier in the engine because the oil and antifreeze is warm, thus saving wear and tear on the engine in the winter months. There are after market manufactures and the OEM also makes them. My 2 cents. Best of luck Sam
