What the water companies use is Isco Co. HDPE pipe. The pipe is not all that expensive but the seams are all fused and the fittings are expensive. Comes in 500 ft rolls. It supposedly will not freeze and burst even on the top of the ground, nor will sun rot it. I put in 3000 feet, of 2 inch underground. Isco has an extensive tech support operation. I hired a guy from the local water co. to install mine on the weekends. So far so good. Try Isco-pipe.com
I've been told that plain old black pipe won't last very long. Digging up underground leaks is an expensive and time consuming chore. Better to spend the money up front than to chase leaks the rest of your life. Been there done that.
