It is a good investment in the satisfaction of bringing old iron back to life. About the only collectors I know that actually had a return on their investment were early Deere collectors. In my westside Indy neighborhood, a lot of Allison engine/transmission folks restore early hot rods. One fellow down the street has an immaculate 1957 Ford Thunderbird that he tore down to the frame and started over. He has $75,000 tied up in that pup.

Ask aviation buffs if they get a return of investment bringing a WWII bird back to life. They spend millions to get an old Flying Fortress back in the air. I had an opportunity about 10 years ago to get involved in an AF T-38 restoration, since I have more hours in that rocket then I care to remember. There was one that somehow got into private hands somewhere along the line. The "investors" budgeted $250,000. It finally got airborne after $2,000,000 was thrown at it.

I know about a fellar on the westside of Indy who threw about $1,000 on an old 1971 JD 4400 combine. It was purely for the satisfaction of bringing an idled machine of 7 years back to life. The combine has a market value of ZERO.
