The solenoid stops motion in both directions as it works a plunger inside the directional spool. If it goes in reverse but not forward it is almost certain the forward clutch has failed. The bellville spring that applies pressure to the front clutch plates often breaks up and actually causes the clutch to lock up and will drive in neutral and lock up in reverse when the broken pieces pile on top of one another causing both clutches to be applied at once. Check the oil level to eliminate that as a cause as I have seen low levels cause slow fwd application. Wish I had $5:00 for everyone I have rebuilt. mEl
