In all likelyhood you just have a bad connection. Most all the vehicles since the 80s use printed circuit boards and 'ribbon' cables. All this operates and very low amperage so a marginal connection due to a little moisture, dirt or corrosion can really make things act funny and drive you absolutely crazy trying to find the problem. In the majority of the cases the problem is simply solved by unplugging the connector cable and plugging it back in to re-establish a good connection, Same goes for grounding wires and connections. Make sure the battery is dis-connected and there's no power present. I have seen thousands of dollars in new electrical parts installed in vehicles by guys trying to chase down a problem that turns out to be a marginal connection. Just don't forget to follow Cadillac's directions to disengage the SIR system (airbags) before you poke too hard under that dash or you could have an un-pleasent surprise.
