I spent six days on a floor specific to abdominal surgery, new stoma and colostomy bags. With the exception of myself, almost everybody was there due to their own fault. The weeping, wailing, sobs and crying from both patients and family was non stop.In particular when the patient and family would watch that same video on a TV cart. That was wheeled from room to room. "Caring for your new colostomy" was the title if I recall. The patient and family would watch, listen and the sorrow would ratchet up another notch. Thank the Almighty my health plan provided a private room with a door that would shut and a TV.
I asked the staff how many patients would be on the floor receiving stomas and colostomy bags. If these people had received regular checkup and colon scopings? Starting in middle age or earlier with high risk individuals. The answer was "few to none".
