Why do you think you need 100 hp to run a splitter?
Here's a pic of the splitter we built this year. I run it off my 65 hp (engine hp) JD 5303. Still need to try it with my Farmall 460. Cylinder is from a friend of mine, angled the blade on a big plow truck. Another friend supplied the chunk of beam & steel for the wedge and ram. Found some other steel for a 3-point hitch and legs. Had the hoses already, bought a couple adapter fittings.
It works great! It -maybe- a little slower than one with it's own engine, and you do have to push the hyd. lever to get it to go back (as opposed to a self-return), but for less than $30 investment, I'll take it any day over a store-bought $2000 model. It's split everything I've put on it, straight or knotty, never bogs the tractor. In fact, I keep the tractor just above idle, no problems.
