If this engine has not been rebuild for some time, my guess is that there will be a large amount of "combustion byproducts" suspended in the engine. What will likely happen is that a detergent oil will loosen these compounds. This will start to cause oil consumption, smoking etc. The reason non-detergent oil stays clean so much longer is that it does not suspend particles, therefore they stay in the engine. The make up of "todays gaskets and seals" is such that it will stand up to these additives much better.
My suggestion if this engine is original: stay with what you have and change more often, after total rebuild, use a detergent oil.
