gooseneck trailer

I have an '89 chevy half ton with a 305 engine. I pull a 16' gooseneck with the deck over the wheels. Currently, the trailer has house trailer axles and tires under it. The hitch in the truck is made out of 8" wide channel accross the frame. However, the trailer seems to shake the truck a lot at about 30 to 40 mph. What can i do to correct this ? I use the trailer to haul a compact JD or some staw on occasion. Is this set up safe ?
