Different max voltage cut-out and different "float" voltage. The good chargers will have a dozen settings along with a battery temp sensor. Charge rate is lower at high temps and higher at low temps.
On cheap chargers, the two setting are almost meaningless, and don't have the proper rate for AGM batteries (which can be ruined pretty easy).
At room temp,
Standard lead acid battery is max charged at 14.8 volts, and then drops to 13.3.
A typical "maintenance free" with lead- calcium plates max charges at 14.3 volts and then drops to 13.2 volts.
A true lead-acid deep cycle battery max charges at 15 volts and then drops to 13.3.
A AGM type gell-cell battery only max charges at 14.1 volts and then drops to 13.5 volts.
A Ni-cad type max charges at 16 volts and then drops to 14.5 volts.
