The best fence wire is the thickest steel wire you can afford. The place that sells you the wire can sell you all sorts of gate hardware that simplify gate wiring. Wrapping one wire around another won't work; you need a connector. They have them as well. The most important part about any electric fence, and the most often overlooked, is a proper ground. Each fence charger comes with instructions for the type of ground that it requires. Do exactly what they say or the critters will get inside the fence and you might even destroy your charger.
