The quake was centered at the southwestern end of the island,only 25 miles from Port-au-Prince but pretty far from the Dominican Republic. I'm sure they felt it though.
Haiti is totally corrupt and overcrowded. Their buildings just fell down, they have no concept of following any kind of building codes. The US Embassy is right in Port-au-Prince and it was undamaged because proper building techniques were used.
