They originally used four six volt batteries all wired in series for 24 volts. With two 12 volt batteries, they also wire in series to get the same 24 volts. The center tie point (+ of one battery - of the other) gets tied to frame ground. Heres a wiring diagram, youre the same except only two 12 volt batteries, center still tied to ground.
